LaGuardia Community College in Long Island City is launching a new initiative aimed at helping adult students succeed in their academic pursuits while balancing work and life commitments. Through a recent grant award of $94,342 from the College Completion Innovation Fund, the college will create an Adult Learner Evening Hub to better support adults enrolled in credit-bearing degree programs. The project responds to shifting student demographics and growing demand for resources that align with the realities faced by many adult learners.

Responding to a Changing Student Population

LaGuardia’s student body includes a large and increasingly diverse adult population. Many students arrive at the college after workforce training or certificate programs and transition into degree pathways, only to find that traditional campus services and support structures are concentrated during daytime hours. The Evening Hub is designed to bridge that gap by offering a centralized space where adult learners can access crucial services during evening hours, when many juggle jobs, family responsibilities, and classes.

Dr. Marsha Oropeza, Director of Adult Learner Success and Credit for Prior Learning, emphasized that the idea for the hub grew out of conversations with students themselves. They consistently reported difficulties accessing academic advising, financial aid offices, tutoring, and other essential support services during times that fit their schedules. The Evening Hub is intended to reduce structural barriers that contribute to students pausing or stopping out of their academic progress.

This development occurs against the backdrop of broader statewide efforts to expand adult access to higher education. New York’s Opportunity Promise program, which offers free-tuition pathways for adult learners pursuing degrees in in-demand fields, has attracted significant interest and highlights the importance of systems designed to support adult students working toward economic mobility.

    A Comprehensive Support Model

LaGuardia’s approach with the Evening Hub goes beyond simple extended hours. The space is envisioned as a centralized resource center where students can receive a range of wraparound supports during their studies. Plans include academic advising tailored to degree completion, tutoring services to reinforce classroom learning, career counseling to help guide employment and internship decisions, and greater evening access to financial aid and registrar assistance. By bringing these services under one roof at times that fit adult learners’ schedules, the college aims to strengthen persistence and retention among this key cohort.

In addition to academic and administrative support, the hub will connect students with basic needs resources and opportunities for faculty interaction, recognizing that adult learners often benefit from a holistic network of encouragement and practical assistance. Because many adult students begin their educational journeys through workforce training programs, LaGuardia has intentionally designed the hub to support continuity between workforce preparation and credit degree pathways.

    Broader Context of Adult Education

LaGuardia’s initiative reflects a larger trend in higher education toward flexible, learner-centered support tailored to non-traditional students. Many colleges are acknowledging that adult learners, those who may be working full-time, raising families, or returning to school after years in the workforce, require services that accommodate their schedules and life obligations. Evening and weekend access to advising, financial support offices, and academic counsel is becoming an increasingly important component of retention and degree completion strategies.

City and state policies also play a role in shaping opportunities for adult learners. Programs like New York’s free tuition initiative for adults, along with grant support for targeted innovations, signal a recognition that expanding access alone is not enough; institutions must also provide meaningful support structures that help students navigate academic pathways successfully.

However, there remain gaps in understanding how best to measure the impact of such initiatives. While the planning grant will help lay the groundwork for the Evening Hub, it is not yet clear how institutions will assess long-term outcomes such as graduation rates, job placement, or continuous enrollment among adult learners. This uncertainty points to a broader need for data collection and evaluation strategies that can inform ongoing improvements in adult-focused educational services.

    Partnerships and Institutional Role

LaGuardia has a longstanding reputation for adult and continuing education, offering programs ranging from English language learning and high school equivalency preparation to workforce training and small business support. The college’s Adult and Continuing Education division is one of the most comprehensive in the City University of New York system, serving thousands of individuals with diverse educational and career goals.

Institutional partnerships and external funding have played a vital role in facilitating these efforts. The College Completion Innovation Fund has backed numerous pilot programs across New York City intended to strengthen student persistence and success. Meanwhile, federal investments in workforce development initiatives, including those that expand Pell Grant eligibility for short-term training, underscore the importance of integrated pathways that bridge education and employment.

By aligning evening service access with a broader strategy that includes workforce preparation and academic degree attainment, LaGuardia positions itself as a leader in addressing the unique needs of adult learners in an urban setting.

    Implications for Adult Learner Success

The creation of the Adult Learner Evening Hub represents a strategic effort to reduce friction in the educational journeys of working adults. It also illustrates a shift in higher education toward designing services that reflect actual student needs rather than assuming a one-size-fits-all model will suffice. When institutions listen to students’ lived realities, as LaGuardia has done, they can develop targeted supports that promote persistence, engagement, and ultimately, degree completion.

Yet, the success of such initiatives depends on sustained investment and robust evaluation. Without clear measures of impact, colleges may struggle to determine which elements of adult learner support yield the greatest benefits, or how to scale successful pilot programs. Future reporting and research that tracks outcomes for adult learners—particularly those balancing academic work with employment and family responsibilities—will be essential for guiding policy and practice.

A New Model for Inclusive Education

LaGuardia Community College’s new Evening Hub pilot reflects a broader shift in how higher education institutions support non-traditional students. By extending access to services beyond the traditional 9-to-5 framework and integrating a comprehensive array of academic, career, and administrative supports tailored to adult learners, the college seeks to foster a model that prioritizes equity, accessibility, and student success in meaningful ways.

This initiative underscores the importance of institutional responsiveness in a rapidly evolving educational landscape, where flexibility and student-centered design are increasingly recognized as essential to expanding opportunity and enabling lifelong learning.
